Avatar rightly scooped two Golden Globes, Best Film and Best Director. My young Coens insisted I let them stay up to watch the highlights so we spent most of the day turning off the news so as not to spoil the surprise. Mixed reports from jaded heads filled the air of the past few chilly weeks. "The story's nothing special", they yawned. "We've all seen that before", they groaned. My kids are amazed that James Cameron is a man of 60 years, amazed that an "old dude" would and did make such a lively and vibrant piece of work. "He wasn't always old", I tell them. Of course 60 isn't old, unless you're ten and then being 60 makes the sphinx look like a springy chicken.
Avatar speaks for itself, a masterpiece that, hopefully didn't go unnoticed in its message.
Back to college for me and my new pals in the quiet Organic College which suffered damage from natures reminder that she still calls the shots. Frozen pipes means damaged rooms and water shortages but still we plod on with good intentions for the year ahead. Little salad plants in the poly tunnels survived minus seven degrees, broad beans are stretching their way up bamboo poles and even mange tout are marching forth. The curly kale remains tall and strong, undamaged by frost remarkably. We have a big clean up to do, seed to plant to begin the cycle for Spring. In times of no money people love to jump on the bandwagon that Organics is a load of hoakum. It isn't, it's working with nature to get the best from the earth for us to make us and keep us healthy and happy, and organics gives something back too. As Cameron said, we are all connected.
